Growing up was really difficult for me. My father was abusive with me and my mother. My teachers at school all knew, and when I would get in trouble, all I thought about was what my dad was going to do to me. My first escape of my reality was basketball. I really found a love for it. When I started high school, I began with drugs. The basketball came second and drugs became my new love. That’s all I really lacked growing up: Love. My drug and alcohol use just got worse and worse as the years went by. I found myself in jails, on the streets, and completely lost. I decided that I needed help.
Now I am a totally different person. I’m 27 and I still have my whole life ahead of me. The main thing though is that I have a purpose in life now, which is to give my life to God and let Him direct me in this world. My purpose is eternally driven. Without this program though, I wouldn’t have gotten the tools and values I need to live this kind of life, such as humility, compassion, selflessness, etc. I still have lots to learn, but I’m definitely moving forward. A pastor once told me that it’s better to be 5 feet away from hell walking away from it, than to be miles away slowly walking towards it. That really hit home with me. I have lived a pretty hard life, but now I’m going to redeem myself and be a blessing to the world.
The duration of the program is 25 months and it is offered as a complete experience in 4 phases. Caritas has both urban and rural settings: The main Centre and residences located in North Toronto, and the 90 acre farm and spiritual Centre, located approximately 25 minutes north of the Centre.
